Greetings,

This new website has the theme, “Belonging to a Community of Hope.” Thinking about the idea of belonging has been in the forefront of my thoughts lately. One thing we have always known about the Campus is that we want it to be a sanctuary, a hopeful place where we know that we belong.

Historically, all of us came from somewhere, belonged to someone. We never made it this far in life without some special people who loved us as we are. Without them we would not be able to claim any degree of self-love. In their hearts, we belonged to them. Imagine living without such people.

Over the years, the homeless have become more and more a part of my life – and your life. Thank you for including them in your heart.

Recently I penned these verses about them.

The Homeless

They bring me a million problems
Yet never a problem
Is this what parents mean?

Despite daily detailed responsibilities
Incredible moments of discovery
Realizing a blessing divine as a gift –

Belonging to God, entrusted to me.

Not just in some part of the world,
Any world, your world, their world, no world,
My world . . .

Where my heart offers freedom for them to roam inside
Not agendas in my head or conditions for their bed.
Every breath left breathed for them.

Never a night turning out my light
Do I not think of them
And hope for better days, of course

Most of all, I wish them inner sanctum,
Not of a place, but of a heart
Embracing and full, gathering them in

A dwelling place of mansions,
Belonging only to them
Filled to overflowing self-love.

Do I believe they deserve to belong in such a spot?
If not, no God there is I choose to worship.
