The Campus for Human Development is a religious non-profit organization, which was formed in 1995 by the merger of three other organizations: Room In The Inn, The Guest House, and FOCUS (Faith Organizations in Covenant for Understanding and Service. All three provided services to the homeless in Nashville. The union resulted in combining the three at one location to provide more comprehensive services.
The Campus is a model of public/private partnership, committed not only to providing enhanced services to the homeless but also to improving the "system" by which these services are delivered.
Our Mission - Emphasizing the Scriptural ideals of love and community through service to the homeless, the Campus provides faithful people of Nashville an opportunity to respond directly to the broken and disenfranchised among us. This fellowship with the poor is at the heart of our purpose.
Our History - The Campus is an extension of the outreach ministry of more than 200 religious congregations in Nashville. Original programs now part of the Campus date back to 1969. Individuals and organizations that created the East Nashville Cooperative Ministries, Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen, and Storefront Ministries later grew to become entities such as Room In The Inn, the Guest House, and FOCUS. The leadership of Father Charles Strobel and David Webb brought forth a shared vision from varied roots and backgrounds.
Our Authority - Religious Congregations determine whether or not we exist. They constitute the membership of the organization and elect our Board of Directors. The Board serves at the pleasure of the congregations, which are, in essence, the "shareholders" of the Campus. Therefore, the Campus cannot exist without this congregational vote of approval and support.
